A decade that is most well known for the post World War boom, the Civil Rights movement, and more, the 1950s was a time that was marked by a transitory political system and wholesome entertainment. Indeed, a time that was considered to be more wholesome and humble. An especially interesting time for the sports world, the 1950s was a time that was thought to be the epitome of American values and healthy family units.

Despite the fact that sports, in general, were very popular during this time, the types of sports that were popular during that time were a tad different from what we see today. In particular, while baseball and boxing were two of the most-watched sports in the United States, football was still on the rise. Moreover, college football was actually much more popular than pro football. And given that college football was such a huge deal, the Rose Bowl between Oregon and Ohio State attracted a whopping 98,202 fans, making it one of the most-watched sporting events of the time period. Either way, despite the fact that pro sports, such as golf and football were starting to gain popularity, they would not be taken seriously for many years to come.

Given that the 1950s was considered to be the golden era of baseball, athletes such as catcher, Yogi Berra, first baseman, Stan Musial, second baseman, Jackie Robinson, third baseman, Eddie Matthews, and shortstop, Ernie Banks, were household names. Additionally, since auto racing was also all the rage, athletes such as Juan Fangio, Lee Petty, Jimmy Bryan, Buck Baker, Tony Bettenhausen, and countless others were front and center on the US sports stage.
