The decade opened with a bang with the release of Alfred Hitchcock's first American film, starring legends Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine. It gave Hitchcock his first and only win for Best Picture. Orson Welles released his first movie in 1941, and it still tops many lists as one of the best ever made. The cinematography and narratives in this movie influence filmmaking for decades.

The Hollywood Theater in New York City was abuzz with the excitement of this Humphrey Bogart movie in 1942. Any film buff of the 40s has probably repeated the lines, "Play it again Sam," or "We'll always have Paris." But the Academy Award for Best Picture of 1942 went to this war film starring Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon. It ran at Radio City Music Hall for a then-record 10 weeks.

World War II had a great influence on filmmaking in the 1940s, inspiring both war movies and films meant to bring up the collective mood of the country during and after the war. Film legend Spencer Tracy starred as Lt. James H. Doolittle in this 1944 classic about the events after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Perhaps the most famous Christmas movie of all time showed up on the big screen in 1946. Starring one of the best actors of all time in James Stewart, and one of the best directors of all time Frank Capra, it is little wonder that families still gather around their TVs to watch this movie on Christmas day.

There was no shortage of great films after the end of World War II. A romantic 1947 film with a spooky premise starring Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison later became a popular TV series by the same name. Willie "The Boss" Stark was the main character from this Academy Award-winning film noir movie from 1949 that set the stage for many other films in that genre.
