The 60's were an immeasurably significant decade regarding the movie industry. Actors that we now think of as cultural icons were born right onto the big screen during this era, like Haley Mills and Jerry Mathers. The movies in this decade reflected outlandish fashion and rock ‘n’ roll, and there was a tremendous amount social change and a huge shift in cultural values.

Unfortunately, US film production took a sharp decline during this era as foreign films were released left and right. However, as viewers turned to television, American film companies took to other forms of entertainment, like records, publishing, TV movies and the production of TV series.

The 60's brought about a new crop of directors as film-making began to fall increasingly more into the hands of stars and their agents. Foreign films continued to grow in popularity and stars were competing for a place in the spotlight. Sadly, the 60's were a decade when the film industry lost a few of its greatest stars and filmmakers to natural causes. There were also a few lost to shocking and disturbing events, like drug overdoses and automobile accidents.

Hollywood did its best to stay tuned to needs of its viewers, and it found a younger, well-groomed, middle-class audience who wanted films that were comical, romantic and without heavy drama. The first teen “beach party” surfing film was produced by Columbia Pictures and turned out to be a huge success. This set the stage for several more teen-related beach party films, which often included performances by various pop bands of the time. Throughout the decade, young audiences were captivated by the new form of entertainment.

Now it's time to take a stroll down memory lane and see how many actors from the fabulous 60s you can name.
