If you are a foodie and love to prepare dishes or watch other people prepare food and imagine how delicious it would taste, you're probably an avid watcher of celebrity chefs. But how do chefs become famous by simply standing in a kitchen and showing their audience how to make soups, cakes, souffles or stews from scratch? The moniker "celebrity chef" begins with Julia Child and her show The French Chef airing in 1963 on WGBH-TV in Boston. Her impact and strong influence on how Americans prepare standard American cuisine was so great that you can now see her "kitchen" as it appeared on her show displayed at the Smithsonian Museum of American History. At the same time Julia Child was showing Americans how to easily prepare French-inspired dishes, another celebrity chef--Fanny Cradock--was taking over British kitchens with a wildly popular cooking show televised in the U.K. between 1955 and 1975. Associated with celebrity chefs is something called the "Michelin star", a rating given to restaurants and, specifically, the chefs preparing a restaurant's food. Chefs possessing Michelin star ratings are considered the best in the business. However, once a chef earns a star (or two or three), they have to maintain these stars by continuing to raise the quality of original dishes. In fact, Gordon Ramsay (Hell's Kitchen), one of the most famous and infamous of all celebrity chefs, suffered the loss of a two-star Michelin rating given to "The London", his restaurant in Great Britain. Ramsay is said to have been so upset about losing his Michelin stars that he told reporters he started crying. "It's terribly emotional for a chef to lose Michelin stars", Ramsey said. "It is just like losing a long-term girlfriend. You desperately want her back". Currently, Ramsay ranks third in Michelin stars, with Robuchon and Ducasse first and second, respectively. Other celebrity chefs include Jamie Oliver (The Naked Chef), Rachael Ray (Rachael Ray's Tasty Travels and 30 Minute Meals), Austria's Wolfgang Puck and Emeril Lagasse, famous for hosting Essence of Emeril Emeril LIve on the Food Network. Lagasse's catchphrases include "BAM!" and "Kick it up a notch!" Lagasse also won the National Best Recipe award in 2003 for his original "Turkey and Hot Sausage Chili" and is known worldwide for his Cajun and Creole dishes. These celebrity chefs are heating up kitchens everywhere. How well do you know them?
