“Woooooo!” If you read that in a Rick Flair voice, you may be a WWE fan! For over 66 years World Wrestling Entertainment, better known as the WWE, has electrified us with its high-flying, dangerously fun twist on professional sports. Grossing more than $700M in 2016, the organization excels in sporting entertainment with its rambunctious characters and storylines merged with daring athleticism. Some of the WWE’s biggest stars have transcended the ring to the Hollywood stage and into pop culture pandemonium like The Rock, Andre the Giant, Stone Cold Steve Austin, and more.

WWE's history begins in the early 1950s. The WWE was founded by Toots Mondt and Jess McMahon in 1952. Originally, the professional wrestling company was known as Capitol Wrestling Corporation (CWC). However, the company underwent several name changes, from WWWF (World Wide Wrestling Federation), to WWF (World Wrestling Federation), to WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment. The company underwent its final name change in 2002.

WWE is the biggest professional wrestling company in the entire world. This company has managed to promote some of the world's most successful storylines and wrestlers. Many of the most significant and iconic matches and moments of professional wrestling were featured by the WWE. Currently, WWE airs RawSmackDown, and other high-profile professional wrestling programs. These programs are aired across the world in more than 150 countries. Every year, the WWE hosts 12 events, including Wrestlemania. These events are pay-per-view. Every year, WWE hosts about 320 live events in many different countries.

WWE launched its first 24/7 streaming network in 2014. This streaming network showcases a complete WWE video library.

Just like other professional wrestling shows, the shows broadcast by the WWE are not true contests. Rather, these contests are entirely entertainment-based. The contests are scripted and choreographed. However, the moves used in these contests can injure performers if these moves aren't performed properly.

Professional wrestling began with the carnival circuit, which is where amateur athletes participated in "fixed" contests. Over time, professional wrestling has undergone many different changes as well as "eras" that have had a major impact on the way the public views wrestling. For example, the "Territory Era" from the 1950s to the 1980s consisted of many wrestling promotions. Due to this era, each territory had its own stars and championship belts.

Wrestling is frequently seen as a spectacle for children and young adults. However, the WWE audience has a massive demographic. In the United States alone, the WWE's TV shows have 15 million years. Now, wrestling is simultaneously considered a low art as well as viewed as a complicated morality tale. WWE's shows touch on a number of topics that are usually featured on TV dramas. These topics include friendship, family, trust, love, honesty, and betrayal. Undoubtedly, WWE has transformed the industry of professional wrestling, arguably for the better, to gain more mainstream appeal.
