If you were alive during 1949, then you know this was an interesting and eventful time. World War II had ended a few years ago and the United States was helping to rebuild Western Europe and Japan. While this was happening, the Cold War was getting underway as well. Society in the United States was changing significantly as the “Greatest Generation” returned home to move to the suburbs on the GI bill. The baby boomers were just getting started! As the United States reveled in the post-war world, society was changing quickly!

Post-war prosperity was a real thing, as numerous companies that used to build military equipment were now able to supply cars! There were newer, better, faster cars on streets all over the country! During 1949 alone, more than 6 million cars were sold in the USA.

Of course, television was becoming a consumer staple as well. During the next few years, TVs would make their way into nearly every living room in every home across the country! In 1949, 10 million TVs were sold as people flocked to catch a glimpse of a new type of TV program called the soap opera! While families still loved to crowd around the TV to get a glimpse of the evening news, entertainment became the name of the game on TV.

Of course, there were other events taking place across the globe. For the first time, China became a communist country, as Mao Zedong defeated Chiang Kai-Shek in the Chinese Civil War. Chiang and his nationalist forces fled to Taiwan and Mao seized power in China. It didn’t take long for China to ally itself with the Soviet Union, which was still being led by Joseph Stalin. Eventually, Russia caught up with the United States and developed its nuclear capabilities. This gave rise to the true start of the Cold War.

One of the most important events that took place in 1949 was the Berlin Blockade, during which the USSR tried to prevent West Berlin from communicating with the West German capital. As the allies airlifted supplies into Berlin, negotiations took place and the blockade would finally come to an end.
