Although the 1950s represent an era that is now described as “simpler times”, this quiz is anything but. Certainly a time marked by modesty, the 50s were one of the last decades in which American TV was truly considered wholesome. While it is highly unlikely that we will ever return to a time in which married couples are sleeping in separate beds (ala Leave it to Beaver), the 1950s will always represent a time in which both television and film were considered safe for everyone.

A decade that was defined by its best-selling periodical, TV Guide, the 50s marked the beginning of an age in which television began to take center stage. Gathered around a large black and white floor model television, the 50s went down in history for being a transitional period, in which having a television in the home went from being considered a luxury to a necessity. Thus, many of the shows were understandably cheesy, given that most homes had only one television, which was most often viewed by every member of the family at once.

If you were raised in the 50s, you likely had a few favorite shows and movies you loved to pieces. You may have obsessed over The Honeymooners or I Love Lucy or you may have made it your business to tune into the evening news. Moreover, you were likely very excited to see the president on TV, given that before the 50s, the president was not broadcasted on television.

To be frank, the 50s were essentially the beginning of the trend of taking on the TV as an honorary family member. Tuning into an array of shows that glorified the Wild West or cackling over the wacky variety shows, this was a time in which America started to build its infamous arsenal of classic television shows and films. Also, since commercials were born in the late 1940s, it is also quite likely that you actually enjoyed these advertisements instead of wishing you had a way to fast-forward through them.

No matter if you loved it or hated it, the 50s was an epic decade for television. That said, let's take a look back at some of the most popular shows, movies, themes, and other events that made 1957 so special!
