For the first half of the 1940s, any household with television was a lucky one. The first TVs that were available to the public at very expensive prices were sold at the 1939 World’s Fair in New York City. TVs weren’t for sale for very long though before there was an enforced ban on all commercial television production when World War II began.

In contrast, the movie industry was seen as an important morale booster during war times and was heavily supported by the U.S. government. War films that promoted patriotism and managed to capture the realities of war surged in popularity. People were looking for a way to cope with what was going on at home and overseas, and movie theaters across the country gave them that outlet.

Hollywood was at the peak of its Golden Age in 1940 and some of its most profitable years came from 1943 to 1946. Censorship rules became less strict and filmmakers took advantage of their newfound freedom to explore innovative film styles and topics. Noir films like The Maltese Falcon and Notorious, by legendary director and producer Alfred Hitchcock, offered a darker type of cinema. Then there are films such as Orson Welles’ Citizen Cane (1941) and 1943 Best Picture winner Casablanca that still holds up today as examples of extraordinary filmmaking due to their technological prowess. After the critical acclaim of Gone With the Wind in 1939, the 1940s gave us more great movies that were adapted from novels. Ernest Hemingway's story For Whom the Bell Tolls (1943) was a huge on-screen success and John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath (1940) belongs in the conversation with Citizen Kane and Casablanca.

Of course, all of this success could not have come without the actors who became stars. The 1940s featured the likes of Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Jimmy Stewart, Cary Grant, and Ingrid Berman. The big-screen star power of the decade was incredible. There were movie stars before the 1940s, but Hollywood’s prosperity and the extra exposure that movie actors got from television programming made them brighter than ever.

When the war ended and television production came back, it came back strong. Americans who had spent the war years in movie theaters and huddled around radios for their entertainment and news were ready to welcome moving pictures into their homes. A whole new avenue for stardom opened up and TV actors gave us lovable and memorable characters to tune in for. You might remember shows like Candid Camera, Howdy Doody, The Lone Ranger, and Hopalong Cassidy that all debuted in the 1940s.

As the decade that saw Hollywood at its finest, and the decade that ushered in mainstream television programming, the 1940s is one of the most important and influential in the history of the moving picture.

Whether you grew up with the stars of the 1940s or you watched their TV shows and films with your parents or grandparents, you’ll surely be able to recognize some famous faces of the 40s.
