The 40s was one of the most dramatic decades in history, with highs and lows society had never experienced before. With the U.S. embroiled in World War II for the first half of the decade, film and stage productions took on new importance—allowing viewers to escape the reality of food and gasoline rationing and the specter of war, even if only for an hour or two. In fact, the U.S. government placed clear expectations on the movie industry, urging it to continue "unimpeded picture production."

With the draft in effect, the movie industry quickly felt the impact of World War II as many of its most promising young stars entered the service. Jimmy Stewart, Kirk Douglas, Bob Hope, Paul Newman, and Clark Gable were all drafted into service and quickly took up arms in defense of the U.S. In addition to these leading men, several of the glamorous, gorgeous stars on this list also served in the armed forces during World War II. As movie studios began to feel the crunch of having their top talent fighting in an overseas war, they began loaning out stars to other studios, offering higher pay and more flexible contracts, and paying a pretty penny for the rights to the newest bestselling books and Broadway hit shows.

Color films were just beginning to take off in the early 1940s, helping moviegoers feel as though they were a part of the action. This switch to color was a boon for many of the stars on this list, whose flawless complexions and impeccable hair and makeup shone even brighter on a colored screen. By the end of the decade, adding color would be a common upgrade to boost a film's production value. And with television sets still fairly uncommon, movie studios didn't have a great deal of competition for paying customers.

After World War II ended in 1945, the U.S. motion picture industry continued to chug along, producing dozens of war movies before the end of the decade. Although the movie industry experienced a bit of a slump in early 1949, as the number of films under production was only about half of the normal amount, the industry's ability to cut production expenses and commitment to entertaining the public helped it make a strong comeback.

With this backdrop in mind, let's get started—how many of these gorgeous 1940s stars can you name?
