You've got your hot-rod, your best girl and you're ready to hit the road. K.C. & The Sunshine Band is disco blasting out of your car speakers and you're ready to hit the road running. Now, what are you sitting in?

It was such a fun decade, the skinny guys had muscle cars and the big dudes sported Ford Pintos. Times were a-changing in the world and car features and facets were a-changing too. Californians were embroiled in a fight to cut the smog, yet keep the velocity of the torque. Car insurance firms demanded car makers add low-mileage bumpers to the design since they were hit with the bills behind the 5 MPH accidents that were destroying the frame. Bumper-to-bumper, yes, we've made a lot of strides in the car industry.

No doubt those strides were built on your hard-earned 1970's automobile dollars.

Did you indulge in the luxury of the Jaguar KJS? Or were you getting around in your GM Vega with the hatchback?

Talk about needing some muscle, American-made cars were taking a beating from several aspects. The imports were the cause of the falling American-made sales. Volkswagen, Toyota and Datsun were the premier imports of the day. 1970 was the year of the 57-day strike at General Motors. Ford, Chrysler and GM were trying to compete with the better quality foreign makes. So the big three came up with the compact car. We saw all of these little Vegas, Pintos and Gremlins running all around. The Ford Mustang ruled the muscle car roost for most of the decade with the Dodge Challenger taking up space as well.

The Lamborghini was still the car of everyone's desire – as it is today. Maybe you ran middle of the road and you picked up your Buick Skyhawk to hawk at the sky from your ride.

But hey, you didn't care which car was leading the sales pack. All you knew was that you were driving pretty in your sun-roofed AMC. It was a decade of the Plymouth Cricket and the Dodge Colt. Maybe you were tooling around in an Oldsmobile Omega. It didn't matter the wind was in your hair, and your Volkswagen Beetle was the little bug that was king of the car jungle.
