The 1970s were a decade that is now long gone and only lives in our memories. However, many important things happened during these times. These significant events and changes still exert an influence on our lives today.

As the 60s ended, the political movements and other developments of that decade produced some lasting changes that became part of our everyday culture in the 70s. These came not only in the form of the politics of the decade, but in other areas that are just as memorable and important. Many of the most lasting relics of the 70s are cultural artifacts related to television, music, fashion, and cars. Most of the questions in this quiz focus on the cultural aspects of the decade.

In politics, President Nixon had one of the most turbulent administrations in American history, which included the heavily publicized Watergate scandal and ultimately ended with the president’s resignation. The Vietnam War was ending as the decade began, but it was still very much on the minds of many people globally and the conflict did not formally end until 1975. There were also large scale protests ongoing during this decade, such as the fatal conflict between the Ohio National Guard and protestors at Kent State University in 1970. When President Gerald Ford took office after Nixon, his administration was not as controversial but he lived through multiple assassination attempts.

Technology was also changing rapidly at this time. The ability to watch and record television shows and movies on video tapes emerged at the beginning of the decade, which helped make entertainment at home a bigger part of our daily lives. Computers that were able to use floppy disks for the first time appeared in this decade, and personal computers with their own microprocessors became something that electronics hobbyists were actually able to use in their own homes. Video games also emerged as a form of home entertainment with a number of different short lived, simple consoles that attempted bring new hit games from the arcade into homes. Some cars produced during this era have become classics due to their unique appearance and high levels of performance. Some of these automobiles find their way into the quiz.

In music, this decade gave birth to the disco era and a number of outrageous forms of fashion. Almost all of the big rock bands of the 60s were still going strong at this time, and a few of the well known acts make appearances in the questions. Classic films such as the Godfather, Star Wars, Jaws, and Rocky premiered during this decade and changed cinema forever while breaking box office sales records. There were a number of ground breaking television shows that perfected the 30-minute sitcom format, which continues to this day.
