Correct Answer: Chris Evert

Chris Evert is a former World No. 1 professional tennis player from the United States. She won 18 Grand Slam singles championships and three doubles titles. She was the year-end world No. 1 singles player in 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1980, and 1981. In total, Evert won 157 singles championships and 32 doubles titles. She reached 34 Grand Slam singles finals, more than any other player in the history of professional tennis. Evert's career winning percentage of 89% is the second highest in tennis history, after Margaret Court's rate of 91%.

Evert first gained attention as a junior tennis player when she won the Girls' 12s national title in December 1966. She turned professional in October 1972 when she was 16 years old. In 1974, she became the youngest player to win a tournament on the Virginia Slims circuit when she captured her first title in Atlanta at age 17 years old. The following year she reached the semifinals of Wimbledon and nearly defeated defending champion Billie Jean King before losing 7–6, 7–6. She reached her first Grand Slam final later that year at the U.S. Open but lost to Martina Navratilova in straight sets.

Evert managed to break through in 1975 when she defeated Navratilova to win her first U.S. Open title. She would go on to win six more majors over the next two years highlighted by a second Wimbledon championship in 1976 which saw her defeat Evonne Goolagong Cawley in straight sets in the final. That victory made her the only unseeded female player ever to win Wimbledon and also marked the beginning of one of tennis' great rivalries as she and Navratilova battled for supremacy over the next decade.

The two players met 80 times with Navratilova holding a 43–37 edge, including 18–16 in finals. They played each other 14 times in Grand Slam tournaments with Evert leading 9–5, including 5–0 at Wimbledon and 4–1 at the French Open where their rivalry began in 1974.
