People grow up taking classes in every area and one of the most often overlooked is geography. Through grade school during social studies, there are numerous map quizzes that test the memories of children regarding major countries, rivers, mountain ranges, and other geographic features. Then, as quickly as these are memorized, they are forgotten; however, geography is important. Geography defines the international relations of countries and continents and it is helpful to know where these countries are on a map.

Over the past few decades, there have been major shifts in the boundaries of countries all over the world. The biggest shift came with the breakup of the Soviet Union (USSR) in 1991. When the Cold War finally came to an end, the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact dissolved. This gave rise to the various Eastern European countries of today. Countries like Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania returned to the map. Poland has its borders redrawn. Then, Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia dissolved as well, giving rise to Slovakia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the Czech Republic. Many of these countries have been a challenge for people to identify on maps, let alone children taking their social studies quizzes!

Then, of course, the major world powers continue to wield a tremendous amount of influence on the international stage. Sure, most people can identify countries like the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia, China, Russia, and England on a map; however, there are numerous other world powers that people routine misidentify. For example, can people correctly place France, Germany, and Spain on a map? What about the three countries up in Scandanavia, which are Sweden, Finland, and Norway? Of course, moving down to Africa and South America can be another major challenge. Can people even place these countries on the right side of the Atlantic Ocean? There are numerous challenges that come with world geography; however, the correct placements are important both for general knowledge and international relations!

With this in mind, why don't you take our quiz on the number of countries you can name? Do you remember your world geography from social studies? Are you a seasoned world traveler?
